Kitchen Remodeling Guidelines

Want to test out some kitchen layouts before you talk to your builder but have no idea where to start?    Here are some guidelines for industry standards from the National Kitchen and Bath Association.  Grab some graph paper (each square represents 3″ in a standard kitchen layout) and a pencil with a good eraser and have fun experimenting!

An Interesting Remodel

I stumbled across this remodel by Damont Design/Build and thought some of you might like to see it.  The house, originally a typical split foyer with no style, is practically unrecognizable.  Additionally (no pun intended, lol), this is a terrific example of good use of exterior materials – stone, shake, siding, etc, creating lots of visual interest and character.

If you’re planning on a large addition this might give you some non-traditional ideas – you know, other than just adding a room off the back.

Looks like they do some nice work over there.

Flooring – So Many Choices

I’m back from vacation refreshed and recharged!  We stayed in a wonderful beach house that was decorated so beautifully.  I loved the place so much it was difficult to pack up and leave!  One thing that really stood out in this house was the flooring…

Two days passed before I realized it was laminate not wood.  I’m usually really good about spotting these things.  This one had me stumped for a while.  There’s my husband and I down on our hands and knees, “are your sure this is laminate?”, “I dunno, I can’t tell.  What do you think?”  Rotflol!  That floor was that good of a wood replica!

I’ve been back and forth whether to use wood or laminate in our remodel.  No doubt about it, wood is beautiful and feels so nice under foot.  The upkeep scares me a bit, though.  Anyone who’s had kids and/or pets (one in the same? LOL) knows what I’m talking about.  Laminate is so much more durable but some of it looks so fake.  One thing I noticed about the laminate in the beach house was the pattern.  The knots and grain repeats were very few, if any.  A pattern repeated over and over is usually a dead giveaway for laminate.  It can be so noticeable.

Well, I thought I was sure I wanted wood.  Now I’m not 100% positive.  One thing is for sure, though, the carpet is outta here!  All of it!

Oh, and if anyone recognizes this flooring and knows what brand it is please clue me in!
